Silvia Acosta Gutiérrez was born in Tenerife, Spain in 1987. She graduated at University of La Laguna, Tenerife, Spain and earned a Bachelor degree in Physics. Before starting her Master she started doing research in the field of Atomic and Molecular Physics, carrying a study in small water clusters under low and moderate electric fields. In September 2011, she completed her Master’s degree in ‘Physics: Structure of Matter and Computational Sciences’ at the same university. She wrote her dissertation in the field of Computational Molecular physics with the title of ‘Optimal covering of C60 by rare gases’. The project was completed by carrying out an intensive research in global optimization of energy landscapes by using ‘Basin-hopping’ Monte Carlo based techniques.
Currently she is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow within the ITN Translocation project and is enrolled in a PhD program in the Department of Physics at the University of Cagliari in Italy. Her research focuses on the development of computational models for evaluating outer membrane permeability.
ITN-Translocation has been a great opportunity to develop as a scientist. It has provided me with a broad vision of “what to be a researcher means”, from lab work to networking and management. Being part of a multidisciplinary network has challenged myself to integrate my work and skills in a synergistic way with others’ work, and most importantly to find a common language to explain my research to scientists with a very different background.
